Querying CVEs with Neo4J
My most popular repo is neo4j-cve. It was a grad school project (CSU's CS533) which I believe was supposed to be beefed up with a classic code screen ("Write a web scraper to get all the CVEs from NIST, then load them into a graph database..."). If I hadn't already been writing code for a while, I'd probably have done it as written. Instead, I looked for the way to do it with the least amount of code possible. Docker gets Neo4J ready, then a succinct (and crude) Python script fetches a structured representation from NIST and transforms it with a Cypher template. In theory, a doctoral student was supposed to use it for their research but I never heard anything more after I got my grade. The only quality signal I've gotten is that it has over a dozen stars on GitHub, from people around the world, some working at companies I respect (AWS, DataDog, Salesforce).
I basically knew how I wanted to do it within a day or two of picking it as my project for the class. Most of the work went into figuring out the Cypher to load everything into the right shape, and then the example queries from the project brief basically fell into my lap. While I was working on it, the professor attached another student. Because I was working a full-time day job, my time was pretty tight, so after a couple calls I basically said I'd do the whole thing myself and put his name on it. Sorry! He was perfectly pleasant, and I hope he's doing well. Only time I've done that and I still feel bad.
